Translation by Rhys:
"At the end of January 2005, Gruff Rhys of the Super Furry Animals will release his first album as a solo artist; and on the 13th of December Huw Stephens will play 2 tracks from the album on his C2 show on BBC Radio Cymru. This will be the first show in the world to play these songs.
The album is called Yr Atal Genhedlaeth and the first
single from the album will be a 7inch double b side. The two songs on the single are: Ni yw y Byd and Gwn mi Wn; and these are the songs that will be played on the Huw Stephens show at 10pm on Monday night.
The single is to be released on the 17th of January followed by the album on the 24th, both on the Placid Casual label. The album (which includes 11 tracks) was recorded by Gorwel Owen at his Ofn Stiwdio
during the summer. Gruff will go on tour in the new year to promote the album.
Therefore if you would like to be amongst the first to hear the new material, make sure that you are listening to Huw Stephens on C2, BBC
Radio Cymru, Monday 13th of December between 10 and 11pm."
News of the US release appears on MTV.com and Billboard. Of the record, on which he plays all the instruments except trumpet and banjo, Gruff Rhys says, "All the tracks are fairly new, but often they came from ideas that are quite
old."

Update: from the Placid Casual press release from Hall Or Nothing:
Gruff Rhys, of Super Furry Animals, releases his first solo album Yr Atal
Genhedlaeth on 24 January 2005 on the band's own label Placid Casual. It was recorded between summer 2003 and spring 2004 at Stiwdio Ofn in Wales with Gorwel Owen who has worked on many of the Super Furry Animals albums including Radiator and Mwng. Gruff is planning a short tour of Wales to accompany its release.
Gruff has said this about Yr Atal Genhedlaeth.
"Yr Atal Genhedlaeth came together quite accidentally. I didn't initially plan to make a record; I usually go to Gorwel Owen's house in North Wales once a year for a couple of days partly for social reasons and partly to put down demos in his studio. I'll normally get about twenty songs out of my system.
"I went there in the summer of 2003 and put about twenty songs down, and it became apparent that about five of them sounded finished. They were pretty simple but they didn't need working on, didn't need to be developed further: they sounded pretty immediate as they were. We're in a luxurious position as a
band (Super Furry Animals) where we always have far too many songs anyway. I thought it would be interesting to record a whole album in the same vein as these songs, so between August 2003 and February 2004 I got another five tracks together. Overall it took about a week to record and five days to mix.
"All the tracks are fairly new, but often they came from ideas that are quite old. Pwdin Wy 1 and Pwdin Wy 2, which are connected, they're ten years old, and I've never had the chance to record them. I've been trying to write Gwn Mi Wn for about ten years too, but I could never work out how to record
it. The general idea for the whole record was based around this song: to get music down to its elemental state where possible, just using the rhythm and the vocal melody.
Gruff plays everything on the record except for the trumpet on Ambell Waith(by Edwin Humphries) and banjo by Gorwel Owen on Chwarae'n Troi'n Chwerw, which is a cover version of a Welsh language standard. "It's the equivalent of perhaps a countryfied China In Your Hands by T'Pau. It's a song by
Caryl Parry-Jones, who is an institution of Welsh songwriting. She concentrated on mostly disco and country and western power ballads. That track haunted me through my childhood. Recording it was very cathartic!"
"Since we did Mwng five years ago I've been collecting ideas for lyrics, and it took this long to get together. I don't know if it's as immediately melodic, but it's a very different record obviously. Rhagluniaeth Ysgafn for example is heavily dependent on the lyrics ~ it's like Heaven's Gate: a list of sins. Yr Atal Genhedlaeth is very lyrically heavy ~ the sleeve is all text as well ~ but I think there are some songs that are melodic enough to grasp, even if you haven't got a clue what I'm going on about.
"Yr Atal Genhedlaeth is about various characters in the stuttering generation, a fictional town, two fictional MC's, Pwdin Wy, fictional pundits, all the sins of the age. There's not much advice for the stuttering generation, more a series of observations.
"And I'm considering splitting up after this record. I'm not sure exactly where, horizontally, or vertically."

26 October : SFA on the O.C.
SFA's Hello Sunshine will appear on The O.C.: Mix 2, a compilation of music featured on the US television show, due out in the US on Warner Bros. Records on 26 October. See Billboard for the complete track listing. The San Jose Mercury News writes: "For the past 14 years, every time it seems this mournful but shimmery Welsh group is about to jump into the mainstream, it does something like record an album in its native tongue or go off on a political diatribe." Hmm, but those things have resulted in the most US sales...~ 16 September
More Press
According to Mojo song titles on the forthcoming album, due in Spring 05, may include: Laser Beam, The Horn, Colonise The Moon, and Where's My Fucking Shoes?. Some quotes about the album: "a bit soundtracky, a bit 1980s cop show" "Knight-Rider at the point of cosmic rapture" "like being sucked into space" "most orchestral record we've ever done" "cosmic funk track about cleansing the world with our super laser beams" "very simple pop songs with some optical illusions for the ears. And a couple of lobsters thrown in."
Speaking to US magazine Magnet, Gruff says of the album now in the works, "Our friends describe it as Steely Dan on crack." Of working in Catalonia, Spain, he says, "Everything seemed a little bit brighter there, and it rubbed off on the music." Regarding music and messages, he notes, "In an age where the Dixie Chicks are politicized, it takes the pressure off us." About the overall sound he remarked, "We've had incredible fun experimenting with sounds, but we are still looking to make a record that sounds like a band playing a room together. We might get there this time."

Wood Panelling & Magnetism
Speaking to Metro, Gruff said, "When I was a kid I listened to a lot of Welsh language pop, people like Meic Stevens and then gradually, as I was getting older, my brother and sister would bring back other records to the house like Bob Marley and Black Sabbath. In terms of songwriting, Lou Reed was a big influence. I was completely obsessed by the Velvet Underground when I was a teenager and because John Cale was a Welsh speaker they were considered all right to like, you know? I'm not particularly well read but I like reading. I've just bought a few books in a second hand shop. I've got one on psycho electronics and another one on wood panelling. I might take it up but it's going to be difficult on a tour bus. We've also been watching a lot of Japanese films recently, like Tetsuo. That film, and it's sequel Tetsuo II ~ Body Hammer, has inspired a few songs. It's a fable about a man who becomes magnetic and eventually the whole worls starts sticking to him. We love to celebrate technology as well. At the moment we're really pissed off with Jean Michel Jarre because he's going around the world claiming that he's done the first 5.1 Surround Sound DVD and we've made two already! He hasn't even made the third! We're gonna have a laser battle with him to the death at the pyramids." ~ thanks to Gaz

New SFA Album Coming
SFA are continuing work on their new album, expected in early 2005. Speaking to South Wales Echo, Bunf said, "There's 14 songs on there but it's difficult to give a definitive description. We were all chipping in with our own material. Cian has written three of the songs, Daf has written two, I've got a couple of them and Gruff has the rest. It's really quite a mixed bag but it still has this continuity...I think it is pretty radical, especially in terms of lyrics...It's a very honest, direct and very loving album."
Gruff told icWales, "The next album will be generally more reflective, with more personal views. But it differs from song to song." Guto said, "For some reason it does sound more like a Super Furry Animals album, than any of the others we have done."

Without John Peel...
Sad, sad news...from the BBC. SFA had just played an amazing live set for Peel on 6 October. Speaking to BBC Online, Gruff Rhys said the band was in "shock." "He was very inclusive of all kinds of music, very open-minded, and introduced a lot of diverse music to the public. He championed Welsh language music and for years was the only DJ on national radio who was willing to embrace it."
Speaking to BBC Radio 1, Gruff said, "I suppose the highlight for us was doing a session in his house, meeting his family and playing in his front room. He was enthusiastic about all the new records he'd had in and picked out an obscure death metal record for us to listen to. We'd just seen him a few weeks back so it was a really big shock. He's been such a champion of culturally diverse music ~ we were just saying nobody thought he was ever going to die ~ we thought he'd be around forever."
Leave your own messages on BBC Radio 1 website. On air Thursday, Bethan and Huw will have tributes from Welsh bands. They point to a thread on favorite quotes on the I Love Music message board. Peelie is wearing his well-worn Mwng shirt in the photo on BBC News.
US Release?
Beggars Banquet/XL hasn't said either way yet on a North American release for Songbook. If you order the Songbook UK DVD, be aware that it is Region 2 encoded and in the PAL video format, not the Region 1/NTSC format used in the US. It will work on many computer-based DVD players, but only some TV-based players. The Japanese release will be NTSC format, but is Region 2 encoded. Confused? Frustrated? Yeah, me too. [Now scheduled for early 2005.]
