Thousands of men stayed away from work and many of them lost their jobs in the quarry. For more details about the strike The North Wales Quarrymen 1874-1922 by R. Merfyn Jones (University of Wales Press) is a good place to start."

Pesda Roc
On 21st June SFA will play their first major show of the year in a 6,500 capacity tent in Bethesda, Gwynedd. It is part of a yearlong festival commemorating the breaking of the Great Penrhyn Quarry Strike. The strike started on 22 November 1900 after Lord Penrhyn, the quarry owner, refused to let union officials collect contributions from members. It lasted three years and became Britain's longest strike. It was a landmark in the development of trade unionism, and was a defining experience for the labour movement in Wales. Thousands of men stayed away from work and many of them lost their jobs in the quarry. For more details about the strike, The North Wales Quarrymen 1874-1922 by R. Merfyn Jones (University of Wales Press) is a good place to start.
"The show will be in the shadow of the great quarry itself. It's going to be a party celebrating the life of Bethesda, rather than the fragmentation of its people. The strike wasn't about the money, it was about the right to a union, and that's something that's being eroded all the time today. It's worth celebrating that people fought for these rights in the first place before they disappear again. It seems as relevant now. There was some kind of golden era somewhere in the middle but that's long time gone. The strike had a profound and painful effect on the town - there's still rifts today. It was an obscene display of wealth by the landowner, who all the while was collecting Rembrandt's in his house five miles down the road. There's still a lot of people who won't set foot on the grounds."

Album, Single & Live Dates : Press Release
Golden Retriever : new single out 30 June
Phantom Power : new album out 14 July : UK [15 July : US]
Live : Wales vs. Azerbaijan : Royal Festival Hall : Bethesda
"AUDIO AND VISUAL : Super Furry Animals release a new single and album in summer 2003. The album, Phantom Power, the band's sixth album, will also be the second Super Furry Animals album to be released simultaneously on conventional audio and DVD. Having made recording history with the Mercury Prize-nominated, gold-selling Rings Around The World, to do this a second time is an indelible mark of the band's questing vision and unique attitude to their music and technology.
Released on 14 July, Phantom Power was produced by Super Furry Animals. Part of the record was recorded by the band themselves at their own studio in Cardiff as well as at Rockfield and Monnow Valley Studios in Monmouth in 2002 with help from Gorwel Owen and Tony Doogan. The band and Mario Caldato, Jr mixed Phantom Power in January 2003. A single will precede its release: Golden Retriever was originally aired at last year's MTV 5 Night Stand and the band's sell-out October 2002 US tour and will come out on 30 June. Phantom Power will be released on Epic Records in 5.1 stereo surround sound, as was Rings Around The World. Its track listing is as follows:
1/ Hello Sunshine ~ 2/ Liberty Belle ~ 3/ Golden Retriever ~ 4/ Sex, War and Robots ~ 5/ The Piccolo Snare ~ 6/ Venus and Serena ~ 7/ Father Father #1 ~ 8/ Bleed Forever ~ 9/ Out of Control ~ 10/ City Scape Sky Baby ~ 11/ Father Father #2 ~ 12/ Valet Parking ~ 13/ The Undefeated ~ 14/ Slow Life
The contents for the Phantom Power DVD are currently being authored with long time artwork collaborator (and Monsterist) Pete Fowler and Cardiff-based collective No.Brake at the helm.
LIVE : Super Furry Animals will make their first appearance of 2003 on 29 March, when the world premiere of new single Golden Retriever will take place on the pitch at the Millennium Stadium, prior to the crucial sold-out Wales versus Azerbaijan European Championship Qualifying Football encounter. This is followed by the already-announced show at the Royal Festival Hall, London, as part of the Stephen Malkmus-curated Down The Dustpipe festival.
The band's first major show of the year takes place at Clwb Rygbi Bethesda in Bethesda, Gwynedd, North Wales, on 21 June. The concert, will occur in a 5000 capacity tent, to commemorate the centenary of the end of the Great Bethesda Quarry Strike 1900-03.
