Update on Charlotte Speddy
On 11th March, the Welsh Star Auction was held to raise money for Charlotte Speddy, a little girl born with severe birth defects. Participants bid on memorabilia donated by many Welsh musicians, sports stars and actors. The auction was held in Bethesda, North Wales, with many more people from around the world participating via the internet. Auction proceeds and funds raised at other events were used to send Charlotte to America for surgery. She's now on the road to recovery. From the North Wales Weekly (3rd August):

"Charlotte, of Gerlan, near Bethesda, was born with two ribs missing and others fused together. This led to curvature of her spine, putting pressure on her vital organs. It was predicted she would not live into adulthood. Since the six hour operation by specialist surgeons at Christus Santa Rosa Medical Centre in San Antonio, Texas, Charlotte has been heavily sedated and on a ventilator in intensive care. Last Thursday there were fears for her life, as her blood oxygen count dipped. But four year old Charlotte is a battler and is now making a faster recovery than doctors had ever anticipated. It is thanks to most Welsh bands and stars - in particular Super Furry Animals - that Charlotte has been able to go to the USA for her life-saving operation. Another mention must go to Bruce Jones (Les Battersby - Coronation Street), who alone is responsible for raising 100,000 to the Charlotte Speddy appeal. ...During the delicate operation surgeons inserted two titanium rods into Charlotte's deformed rib cage. Her back was straightened, relieving the pressure on her lungs and other organs. Charlotte will now stand the same height as her twin brother. Charlotte's father added, 'There will be one hell of a party when she gets back!'"

Many thanks to Marc Colclough of Ffarout Promotions for the news update, and to all superfurry.com visitors who participated in the auction. ~ 1 September

See Pete Paint
Artist Pete Fowler invites you to watch him at work:

"I'm doing some live painting this saturday from 5pm to 7pm at Herbal on Kingsland road in East London. It's my unofficial sfa event, I only say that to try and get some furry heads down as they will be probably camped outside the Forum waiting for the gig or in the pub, so why not while away the wait watching me paint and having a pint or should that be watching a pint and having a paint?"

The Herbal is located at 12-14 Kingsland Road. Nearest tube is Old Street/Northern Line.

Pete's animated film for Receptacle for the Respectible will appear on the forthcoming Rings Around The World DVD. He's currently developing a line of monsterised toys for a Japanese company, and recently painted a mural on Oldham Street in Manchester, next to the clothing store Arc:

"[It's]...the largest piece I've done to date, it's a huge mutated self portrait of me in front of my crashing computer!?"

Visit Fowlerism for more of Pete's monsterised world. ~ 28 June, thanks to Pete for the news, Mark, Dan

Glasgow resident Ellie posted these directions to the SFA Internet List, and we share them here with many thanks:

"Glasgow is on a grid so it's fairly easy to find streets. Sauchiehall St. and Argyle St. are parallel, linked by Buchanan St. Turn right out of Central station to reach Buchanan, or from Buchanan bus station, head down, round the side of Concert Hall, to reach Sauchie/Buchanan. Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT) - Rose St - head up Sauchiehall St, past Dunnes stores and Photo Factory. At the next corner turn right - this is Rose St.- it's just up here on your right. Barrowlands - is in Gallowgate. Head down to the bottom of Buchanan St, left along Argyle St, till you reach Glasgow Cross (can't miss the old Tolbooth) - keep left along Gallowgate until you see sparkly stars on a building! Renfrew Ferry - Clydeside - from same Tolbooth at Glasgow Cross, head down Saltmarket towards the River Clyde, cross over, turn right and keep going till you see the wee ferry (yes, it is really) which looks like a greenhouse afloat! Or, take a taxi to save your legs - it's a wee hike!"

Visit ringsaroundtheworld.co.uk to share your reports of the weekend's events!
